You have to be tough to teach today.

Recent debate on stress has focused on its impact on teachers.   Example: an experienced, dedicated teacher was banned from teaching for life after beating a 14 year old with a dumb-bell, after being repeatedly taunted and goaded by the class.  At his court hearing, he said that “lots of teachers are ticking time bombs” (Guardian, July 2011).

Stress is important but it is possible to place two individuals in the same working environment and find one succumbs to the pressure of stress and another thrives.

Years ago, before GPS but just after sealing wax, a friend was on hols with her family. The independently ambitious marching around a European capital wasn’t turning out so well. The map had pictures rather than streets, the instructions were ambiguous, and grumpy tiredness had set in. Where was this pesky  17th century Princess’ palace muttered the super intelligent  (and self confessed over achiever)  parents?

For me to say this is to shoot myself in the foot but be careful, very careful about taking the stuff you read in the papers for granted. A lot of what you hear about modern China by ex pats, politicians or journalists is just plain wrong. Sunflower an off duty tour guide who picked me up in the Forbidden City to practice her English told me more about China than I learned anywhere else.

Preston Bottger is Professor of Leadership and General Management at IMD. For 25 years he has combined teaching, research and consulting in leadership development and strategy execution. Before joining IMD, Preston Bottger was Professor of the Practice of Management at the Fuqua School of Business, Duke.  His recent book (editor) is “Leading in the Top Team”, Cambridge University Press, 2008.
